What to do in Pusteria Valley with bad weather

What to do in Pusteria Valley with bad weather

The Pusteria Valley is a beautiful valley in South Tyrol close to the Eastern Alps. Almost 100 km wide, it is famous for the presence of three national parks: the wildlife park Dolomites of Sesto, Fanes-Sennes / Braies and Ries-Aurina.

It is a very quiet place: around only nature, fresh air and the vastness of incredible landscapes. Excursions, guided tours in the woods and winter sports are the main activities of the area.

However, as it often happens up in the mountains, it is likely to have a few days of bad weather: regardless of the season, sudden changes in temperatures might stop us to do outdoor activities.

What to do then if it rains or it is too cold to go outside? No worries! This valley is full of interesting things to do and see. Below a few ideas that can be suitable for everybody: couples, singles or families.

Dolomythos Museum: it is localed in the highest portsion of Pusteria Valley, in San Candido village. The museum features displays and lots of interesting materials useful to learn how Dolomites ere created and have been changing over time. There is also a lovely area dedicated to kids and many workshops for our youngest guests!

  • The Messner Mountain Museum: it is dedicated to the famous climber Reinhold Messner, and paying a visit to this museum is definitely something to do. In reality, the whole museum consists of six structures located in six different villages in South Tyrol and in the Belluno area. You can visit them all with one ticket (the Tour Ticket) and, believe me, it will be a unique experience. However, if you do not have enough time and just want to visit one location, the most interesting one, in my opinion, is the MMM Ripa, set up in the Castle of Brunico. In addition, the Ripa museum gies the opportunity to learn about the life and culture of more than 25 local populations. More info:

  • Brunico Civic Musuem: Brunico Archaeological Museum is perhaps more interesting than the Civic Museum but this latter one also incudes a visit to its stables and horses. Therefore, if you have kids and the weather is not nice enough for some time in the nature, this place might be a good alternative. More info:

Interesting for those who want to deepen their knowledge of the culture and customs of the Pusteria Valley. It sould, however, be chosen preferably on days when the weather is still good enough to allow some walk outdoor, as the museum is mostly organised outside. More info:

  • A little further, going past Campo Tures, another wonderful thing to visit is the Nativity Museum of Auina Valley. Here, the Nativity is considered a strong and those shown in this museum are really spectacular, coming from many different parts of the world.

These are just five ideas on what to do in Pusteria Valley if the weather is bad. However, the list is certainly not exhaustive and the whole area is full of museums and exhibitions that you can visit and that convey the story and the culture of the entire South Tyrol.

In case you feel lazy, instead, no worries at all. We have plenty of things for you here at the hotel. A nice cup of tea in front of a romantic fire, or… what about a full day spent at our wellness centre?!
